Your Questions Answered on Web Design

We know that starting a new website project can be a daunting task so we have pulled together a few FAQs to try and set your mind at ease. There are lots of jargon and acronyms in the world of the web – so hopefully we have done our best to explain them and demystifying a few along the way.

How should I choose an agency to work with?

It is definitely worth finding an agency that fits with your company‘s need and your personality. We like to get to know our clients and understand your needs – as we know that makes an effective project. We are certainly “in for the long-term” and that is matched by the fact that some of our long-standing clients have been with us since the start. We have gotten to know what makes them tick and worked with them to really drive their online presence forward.

Don’t be afraid to ask for testimonials or case studies. We have worked on large scale website projects like www.businesslink.gov.uk in both a consultative and content role but equally we have relished the challenge of working on smaller start-up projects like www.planbsafety.com

We have lots of examples of work from our key sectors which include – Tourism & Leisure, Holiday Parks, Retail and luxury products, extreme sports – and our clients are happy to share their experience of working with us.

We have an extensive client base, ranging from independent traders through to corporate clients and government agencies. For more information on all our clients please see our portfolio

Do you do more than just build websites?

In a nut-shell, yes! Over the last five years we have pulled together an experienced team of web specialists that are able to offer a complete package of online services. Some design and print agencies often bolt on website design services – we don’t – we’re exclusive to web and proud of it!

What makes us different is that we offer a complete range of web, search, content and social media services that we believe offer you the best opportunity to exploit the web.

How long does a website build take from start to finish?

Every project is unique so it really depends on what sort of functionality you require from your website. Don’t worry; we will work with you to ensure your project is kept on track throughout the process. At the beginning we ask you to fill in a Website Objectives form – this document is a great way for you to provide us with lots of information so we can really understand what you need your website to deliver for you.

Based on that information we will provide a fully costed proposal and if you decided to work with us here is an example of a typical website project process:-

1st Job – agree functional specification

2nd Job – create a wire frame diagram of the proposed website

3rd Job – create designs of the proposed website

4th Job – choose and sign off basic designs

5th Job – website build takes place – copywriting & photography elements added

6th Job – create a test environment for website development. This can be password protected and you can follow progress of the website as it is built.

7th Job – Quality Assurance checks are carried out and appropriate redirects are set up for the pages of the existing website.

8th Job – website goes live

It is worth thinking about your content early on as throughout the project we will ask you for material. A dedicated Account Manager will be assigned to you for the duration of the project and we will keep in contact with you regularly and check the progress meets with your requirements.

Will I own the website once it is built?

Yes, of course! On completion of the project, ownership of the website will be passed to you and all associated files will be supplied by Key Multimedia. Our pricing includes major updates to the CMS software for the first six months after your site goes live – after that any new updates to will be charged on an hourly basis.

How can I update my website?

All of the websites we build are delivered with a Content Management System (CMS) that gives you total control over your website content with easy to understand interfaces and user-friendly content editors. As long as you have access to the Internet you can securely log in and instantly start adding to, updating and editing your website content.

You can upload different types of content including text, images, Word documents, PowerPoint slides and PDFs. Embedding video clips from the likes of YouTube and Vimeo is as easy as cutting and pasting a small piece of code.

We include training before we handover your new site so don’t worry you will have all the tools to update your site.

What about Hosting?

We don’t provide hosting as a specific service, but we prefer to partner with a trusted third party hosting company. We like you to own that hosting contract but are more than happy to manage your hosting for you.

Setting Key Multimedia up as a technical named contact makes it easy for us to contact them if problems arise.

What quality guidelines do you follow?

Our development team know that high quality code is fundamental to an effective website so we strive hard to ensure that the sites we build are accessible to as broad a range of web users as possible. Likewise, now that Google factors page load time as part of its search algorithm there is even more reason to ensure your website code is clean and fast!

Our office uses a mixture of internet devices – so will our new website work in different browsers?

Yes! Our development team have extensive knowledge of supporting different browsers and are more than happy to chat through any requirements with you. Older browsers such as Internet Explorer (versions 6 to 8) will have backwards compatibility measures in place.

For example, older versions of Internet Explorer don’t support multi-column layouts, multiple background images or rounded corners on elements such as buttons and boxes but with backwards compatibilty in mind, those features can and will be implemented where possible giving your users a seemless experience across all platforms.

What about smartphones and tablets?

You will have noticed that smartphones and tablets like the iPad are changing the way we use the Internet. These clever little gadgets with web browsers and Wi-Fi connections built into them are ushering in a whole new era of consumer behaviour but, more importantly, are bringing opportunities for you. You don’t necessarily need a separate version of your website for it to display on various screen sizes – a simple mobile stylesheet may be all you need.

We use HTML5 wherever possible to build websites, to ensure your website works correctly across as many devices as possible.

What happens if my website goes down?

It is realistic to be prepared that your website could fail. However, our experienced development team will do their utmost to have your website back up and running as soon as possible. Having arrangements in place, like setting us up as a named contact with your hosting company makes it easy for us to react quickly.

Will our new website be fully tested?

We have a quality control procedure in place which ensures that every website is tested before it is delivered. We test for bugs, cross-browser support and broken links to name but a few – oh, and we also check the grammar and spelling of page content.

What about training?

Managing your own site can be a daunting task but don’t worry we will give you all the tools and training to take control of your website. We recognise that this is an important part of an effective website which is why a portion of our website costs are set aside for project management and training.

We are happy to deliver 1-2-1 training or in small groups. We’ve also written a basic user guide covering aspects of the WordPress CMS which we will supply to you before your site goes live.
